whew. i haven't had time to update my blog lately because i was focused on my dad's 60th birthday. it was this past Saturday, and i wanted to make a big deal out of it because my dad is sort of cool. i really wanted to buy him tickets to a Giants game, but considering that would've cost me a small fortune (and my dad would've killed me for spending so much) i opted for a homemade gift—a scrapbook.

in late September, i sent a request out to family members and my dad's friends and co-workers for stories, memories, embarrassing moments, gaffes on the golf course, photos—anything really—related to their experiences with my dad. i think, after 60 years of living, a person deserves to know the impact he or she has had on the world. i wanted first-hand accounts of my dad's awesomeness and silliness and kindness, and i wanted them all in one scrapbook that he could flip through whenever he wanted. (sort of a roast-in-a-book.) anyway, it was an awesome project, so much fun to put together, and like i told my dad—it started out as a gift for him, but turned into a gift for me. it was amazing to read over and over how much everyone admires my dad. that kind of thing warms a daughter's heart, truly.
but i'd never done the scrapbook thing before, not fully, and i didn't realize what a time-consuming venture it is. i was still working on the book Friday night, hours before i planned to give it to him. but it all came together, and he apparently loved it.
then, that afternoon into the evening, we had a really fun shindig at the house, during which balloons were bandied about, red wine was consumed (and spilled), dollar bills were hoarded (it isn't a family party unless Left, Right, Center is played) and everyone got a piece of my dad's beloved birthday cake (white cake with white frosting and coconut layered in—yum).

and as if all that weren't enough, the Giants were on TV in Philadelphia on Sunday, and they beat Baltimore soundly. i don't think my dad could have asked for much more to ring in his 60th birthday.
